How to counter suicide ganking: Part 1 (Solo Mining)

In the spirit of James 315’s original mission, I will be releasing a multi-part series on how to counter suicide ganking. While I am James simply didn’t want brain-dead idiots and AFKers mining. The third… iteration of CODE, known as Safety, is CODE in name only. We will talk about this later, but it includes rape threats, faked deaths, defamation, and many, many TOS violations. For now, I just want to go over strategies that will significantly lower the chance of you being ganked, specifically while mining in hi-sec.

Key concepts:

  1. Never mine AFK. Ever. Miners groan when they hear this, because everyone says this. But it’s true. Most mining ship losses are due to AFK mining.
  2. Do not use expensive modules. Even tank modules. The most common mistake I see on well-tanked ships is Procurers and Skiffs with ORE strip miners, storyline mining laser upgrades, and faction multispectral hardeners. The reason tank works is not because they can’t kill you, it’s because it wouldn’t be worth it. Don’t make it worth it.
  3. Don’t buy a permit or join Safety to avoid ganks (or for any other reason). It will just make you a target for more scams.
  4. Fully insure your ship. Tech I mining barges, Orcas, and Ventures insure for a large percentage of their value.
  5. Set Safety, CODE, and other ganking corporations as Terrible Standing. If they are in system, get ready to warp out. Do the same for Criminals.
  6. If you see combat probes or groups of Catalysts on D-Scan, warp out.

Now that this is out of the way, let me share some fits and specific strategies for miners.

Ventures:

The key thing the vast majority of Venture miners forget is their ship is able to warp off from 1 warp scrambler or 2 warp disruptors. Make sure to orbit the asteroid you are mining with your afterburner on. If you are attacked, do not give up! If they bring enough tackle, align out and overheat your afterburner. Catalysts and Atrons will be out of range. Thrashers will miss. Coercers will have the best chance of killing you, but you should have enough tank to survive long enough to warp off. If they don’t, just warp off.

The fit is under 1 million, and very difficult to kill if flown correctly. This can be flown by a new character, and if you do lose it, the ganker will lose far more than you will. The low slot can be replaced with a mining laser upgrade, an overdrive injector, or a damage control. Any of those work.

T1 Mining Barges

Do not use any T1 barge except for the Procurer. They are unable to fit enough tank to avoid ganks. Mining barges do not have any warp core strength, so any warp disruption module will render it unable to warp.

Use as many T2 modules as you can, aside from the core defense extenders. Changing them to meta modules is OK if you don’t have the skills to use T2. Make sure to insure! If you are attacked, overheat your hardeners. With all level 5 skills, you will get over 80,000 EHP! Procurers are the least likely to be ganked out of all the mining ships due to them being cheap, but extremely tanky.

Exhumers

Again, only use the Skiff. Hulks and Mackinaws are treats for gankers, and will not last 30 minutes mining. Make sure you are able to use all modules at T2 before using a Skiff. You should also have no fitting issues, but if you do, using a 3% power grid implant is okay.

Using the X-Type hardener and faction extenders is acceptable here, but don’t even think of using ORE strip miners.

As far as the Orca goes, never use an Orca to mine solo. I will talk about mining in fleets shortly.
